201: Intermediate Blackwork

This course is designed to develop basic counted threads skills to the intermediate level specializing in Blackwork embroidery. You will learn the two styles of Blackwork, back stitch filling patterns and double running stitch, choosing suitable materials, designing personal work, colour concepts as applied to Blackwork, critical analysis of their work, historical background and the use of traditional and contemporary materials and methods. You will design and stitch your final project.

This course is designed to develop basic counted threads skills to the intermediate level specializing in blackwork embroidery. You will learn the two styles of blackwork, back stitch filling patterns and double running stitch, choosing suitable materials, designing personal work, colour concepts as applied to blackwork, critical analysis of their work, historical background and the use of traditional and contemporary materials and methods. You will design and stitch your final project.

Prerequisite: Basic Counted Thread Course or equivalent from another recognized organization or institution, or as noted. Or, you may submit a minimum of three detailed slides or pictures of different pieces of your work in blackwork, plus one unmounted piece showing a variety of stitches. The Education Director, in consultation with the Education Committee, will consider your application based on your submission.
