Bonnie’s Beaver is stitched using traditional crewel wools but updated with sequins, beads and coloured tulle, as well as highlights in cotton floss and a dimensional branch held in his paw. Thirteen maple leaves, one for each province and territory, are made of different filling stitches, creating a sampler for future reference. The body of the beaver uses stippling for shading with a rather splashy tail of battlement couching and beads—a challenge for the confident beginner but lots of variety for the intermediate stitcher.

Techniques used in the project: Crewel and surface stitching, beading, laying fabric (tulle)

Stitches used in the project: Back stitch, Battlement Couching, Buttonhole stitch, Chain stitch, Coral Knot stitch, Cretan stitch, Cross stitch, Fly stitch, French Knot, Herringbone stitch, Running stitch, Satin stitch, Seed stitch, Stem stitch, Straight stitch, Trellis stitch
