Description

Join incoming EAC/ACB Education Director Mary Van Tyne for an in-depth look at the America’s Tapestry project and the role she played as Pennsylvania State Director. Learn more about the process behind creating the Pennsylvania panel, which depicts two flagmakers and two significant locations in Pennsylvania’s history, and the lessons learned from directing, planning, and executing such a large piece of embroidery within a single calendar year. Pennsylvania’s panel took over 4,000 hours to complete and features the work of over 260 embroiderers from across the commonwealth and beyond. Mary will also be pleased to answer your questions about the panel, the project, and about herself in this one-hour lecture.

In addition to being a member of EAC/ACB, Mary Van Tyne is also a member of the Pittsburgh, PA-based Three Rivers Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. She has been honored to serve in positions in that organization at the chapter, regional, and national levels, including tenure as the National Virtual Lecture Chair from 2021 through 2024. Currently, she is the co-state director for the Pennsylvania panel for America’s Tapestry, thirteen hand-embroidered panels that celebrate diverse stories that reveal each colony’s struggle for independence, as a celebration for the semiquincentennial in July 2026. Pennsylvania’s panel features flagmakers in Westmoreland County and Philadelphia, as well as the buildings of Old Hanna’s Town and Independence Hall, and can be viewed at americastapestry.com.

When not stitching or otherwise volunteering, Mary works at Heritage Community Initiatives, a human services non-profit organization based in Braddock, Pennsylvania, dedicated to improving three key factors of socioeconomic mobility: transportation, education, and nutrition.
