Description:

Framed and under glass.

Building motif is of Solomon’s Temple

This motif includes 2 birds in the upper 2 corners on top of tall floral arrangements as well as 2 pairs of birds on either side of the top of the temple.

There is a garden area between the temple and the gates with a row of trees.

Thread colours – blue, red, ecru and brown

Condition: Good

Description of condition:

Fabric deterioration – The only deterioration is at the bottom where the framing shows the very bottom of the fabric.  There is a hole to the right of the middle and there are what appears to be rust marks and some has eaten away at the fabric along the edges.  They are rather large so they and in groups of 1, indicating that it was not staples, perhaps tacks.  Not sure when the rusting would have been from, perhaps a prior framing job.  Stitching was likely on a frame and would have been laced on.

Also based on edges of sampler where lighter fabric colour can sen, the fabric is very dark on the whole and more so on the top of the sampler.

Thread deterioration – Some thread has deteriorated in the motifs area only.

Quotation from I. Kings, Ch8, V 12, 13, 27

When spake Solomon, The Lord said that he would dwell in the thick darkness I have surely built thee an house to dwell in, a settled place for thee to abide in for ever. But will God indeed dwell on the earth behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain in thee, how much less this house that I have builded.
