Owner / Donor Story:
This reproduction Sampler was stitched by Joyce Owers, a long time member of the St. John’s Guild of Embroidery who passed away in February 2024.
Originally from Britain, Joyce came to Canada in the 1950s to work as a nurse with the Grenfell Mission. She provided nursing care to the outport communities of Newfoundland and Labrador, before moving on to working in the Northwest Territories for a long period of time. Retirement brought her back to Newfoundland where she settled in Carbonnear, on Conception Bay. Joyce travelled to St. John’s ( 1-1/2 hours in good weather) in all weathers to attend guild meetings and volunteer at Commissariat House where she demonstrated bobbin lace making, dressed in period costume. She loved to stitch.
The sampler has been donated to the SJGE auction that will be held in November 2025.
