Harlequin is a study in black and white. As you work the 18 tiles, you will learn the basics of reversible and non-reversible blackwork and combine Ukrainian whitework and pulled thread stitches. You will stitch with two sizes of pearl cotton and stranded floss on 28-count linen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get the most out of class time, the diamond-shaped grid is worked before the seminar and will take approximately 15 to 25 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explore color theory to understand the reasons behind colour choices and their effects on a work of art in this intensive class. Before the seminar, you will select a painting that holds special meaning for you and then choose DMC threads that match the colours of the painting. Natalie will be available to discuss\/review your painting choice and colour selections.
After careful exploration and experimentation with colour order in class, you will apply the goldwork technique of couching in the round using your relative colour proportions, as observed in your selected painting. The couched ring shape features no hierarchy of colour nor a clear starting or ending point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will deepen your knowledge and confidence in colour selection and technical stitching as you explore and experiment, resulting in an embroidery piece that is a personal tribute to your chosen painting. Pacific Reflections, an ode to British Columbia, is a stumpwork design accented with goldwork. You will stitch BC icons, such as the majestic orca, with black and white kid leather outlined in pearl purl metal thread. String strands of metallic thread from the fins to the main fabric to emulate the water flowing off the whale as it breaches. You will stitch a Haida totem pole in the foreground and add BC jade stones at the base. With its wired, detached petals, your stumpwork Pacific Dogwood will have a lifelike appearance. You will add Western red cedars standing majestically in the background along the rocky shoreline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you stitch your scallop shell, you will learn the basics of boutis, optional stitches, and several finishing options. While the technique is basic and straightforward, the application of the technique makes boutis unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seahorse Sam is a beautiful canvas project to learn or improve your canvaswork skills. During class, you will learn how to manipulate Caron Watercolors thread for the best effect. You will begin by stitching the beautiful seahorse and then creating the bargello sea background\u2014all using beautiful variegated threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this class, you will learn the introductory techniques of punto-in-aria needle lace. This includes the layout and structure of the technique and the basic stitching methods. You will be making your lace square with size 30 ecru cotton lace thread. You will have enough thread for several squares suitable for adorning table napkins, pillowcases, placemats, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punto-in-aria translates as \u201cstitching in the air.\u201d This technique was first documented by Giovanni Antonio Tagliente in a 1528 publication and is considered the first true needle lace. Join the ranks of those who have been \u201cstitching in air\u201d for almost 500 years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, you will add a variety of interesting and intricate borders around the centre sphere to build the abstract design. As the stitches are placed, you will see an abstract garden forming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stitches featured include chilly hollow, a variety of Jessicas, and a multitude of crescents (you won\u2019t believe the versatility of this stitch). A plethora of metallic threads are used to add sparkle. If you want to learn new techniques while challenging yourself by mastering complex canvaswork stitches, Byzantium is for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
