Registration Dates: September 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023 (4 months)
Note: This project is only available for the duration of the registration period.
Create a small piece of crazy quilted, embroidered fabric, then fashion this into a small project of your choosing. There will be no small pieces of different fabric patches to sew together to create the base – you will just use one base fabric and create the illusion of patched seams with linear embroidery stitches. Some examples of projects that you could make include an ornament, needle book, book cover, tea cosy, table runner or a pillow top.
Techniques used in the project: Crazy quilting AKA “Playing with Stitches”, beads and/or buttons to create a pleasing design
Stitches used in the project: Surface stitches to include stem/outline, feather, fly, herringbone, French knots, lazy daisy, buttonhole stitch and its many variations, chain stitch, pistol stitch, bullion knots, spider webs, and composite stitches made using the previously listed stitches
Size of Design Area: varies with the project chosen. A needle book would typically be 4.5″ x 6″
Supplies needed: A base fabric for the embroidery (recycle a damaged damask table napkin, use a silk dupioni or jacquard piece, or a tone-on-tone patterned cotton fabric); embroidery threads (floss, perle cotton, overdyed cottons); beads and buttons; ribbons (narrow widths or fancy braids); lace (use those fragments you have been saving!)
